The French president’s speech was firm and unmissable. He criticized President Trump’s Greenland proposals, condemned tariff threats on European nations, and called for respect, science, and the rule of law over bullying and brutality.

“We do believe that we need more growth, we need more stability in this world, but we do prefer respect to bullies. We do prefer science to conspiracies, and we do prefer rule of law to brutality,” Macron said.

Yet the sunglasses weren’t a fashion stunt—they had a personal reason. Macron has been dealing with a minor eye condition: a sub-conjunctival hemorrhage, a harmless broken blood vessel that can make the eye appear red and puffy.

“Please pardon the unsightly appearance of my eye. It is, of course, something completely harmless,” he previously explained at a military event.
