At the same time, data shows American women, on average, are physically larger than previous generations. A study in the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education found that the “average” woman now wears between a misses size 16 and 18, equivalent to a plus-size 20W. Waist measurements have grown from just under 35 inches to over 37 inches in the last two decades.
Susan Dunn, a contributor to the study, told Today that recognizing these changes can help women feel less isolated or self-critical. She also urged the fashion industry to respond, calling for clothing that fits properly and is accessible — not hidden in obscure sections or available only online.

Government data confirms the trend. According to the CDC, the average American woman now weighs about 170 pounds, up from roughly 140 pounds in the 1960s. Experts cite several reasons: more sedentary work, screen-heavy lifestyles, easy access to calorie-dense processed foods, and genetics. At the same time, changing cultural attitudes have allowed women to prioritize self-acceptance over constant dieting. Stress and limited access to nutritious foods also contribute.

Yet health professionals caution that body confidence doesn’t mean ignoring medical realities. Obesity rates have doubled globally since 1990, and conditions like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers remain a serious risk, according to the WHO and the Mayo Clinic. Social media is a double-edged sword: it can empower self-expression but also encourage sedentary habits and unhealthy routines.
Experts emphasize balance as the key. Women can celebrate individuality, embrace body positivity, and challenge outdated beauty standards — while also staying mindful of long-term health.
In the digital era, beauty is becoming broader, more inclusive, and more personal than ever. The conversation isn’t over, but the narrative is finally shifting — one feed, one post, one empowered woman at a time.
