A man enters prison for the first time. Lights out. His cellmate calls out from across the block, “Number twelve!” The whole cell block bursts into laughter. A few minutes later, someone shouts, “Number four!”—more laughter erupts.
The new guy, confused, asks, “Why is everyone laughing at just numbers?”
The cellmate explains, “We’ve all heard these jokes so many times, we just shout the number instead of telling the full joke.”
Feeling brave, the new guy yells, “Number twenty-nine!” The entire block erupts, prisoners rolling on the floor laughing harder than ever.
Breathless, he asks, “Why was that one so funny?”
The cellmate laughs, wiping tears away. “We’d never heard that one before!”
