The Three Prisoners and Their One Personal Item
On a long ride to a high-security prison, three men sat quietly on a transport bus. The mood inside was heavy. Each man knew he was heading toward a long stretch of incarceration where every day would feel the same.
As the journey continued, one prisoner finally broke the silence. Under the prison transfer rules, each inmate had been allowed to bring one personal item with them to help pass the time once they arrived.
Curious, he turned to the man sitting next to him.
“So what did you bring to keep yourself busy all those years?” he asked.
The second prisoner reached into his bag and carefully pulled out a small wooden case filled with oil paints and brushes.
“I’m going to paint,” he said proudly. “I’ll capture everything—the prison yard, the cell blocks, the light through the bars. Maybe by the time I get out, I’ll be a real artist.”
The first prisoner nodded thoughtfully before revealing his own item: a brand-new deck of playing cards.
