“These women were inseparable friends, mothers, wives, and passionate skiers,” the families said in a statement. “Our focus now is supporting our children and honoring the lives of these extraordinary women.”
The Avalanche Incident
The group was returning to camp during a guided multi-day expedition when the avalanche struck near Castle Peak. Rescue teams responded immediately, but harsh weather and unstable snow conditions complicated efforts. Authorities have closed public access to the area through mid-March to ensure the safety of responders.
Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon said the search operation has shifted from rescue to recovery, as hopes of finding additional survivors have faded.
Lives and Legacies
Kate Vitt, a mother of two and former SiriusXM executive, lived in Marin County and was remembered by her community for her warmth and dedication. Caroline Sekar, 45, and her sister Liz Clabaugh, 52, were both mothers and professionals deeply involved in their communities. Their family shared their profound sorrow with The New York Times, calling them “incredible sisters, mothers, wives, and friends.”
Members of the Sugar Bowl Academy ski community, where several of the women were active, expressed their grief and emphasized the impact the loss has had across the region.
“Each of us is affected by this tragedy. The support for the families reminds us how special this community is,” said Stephen McMahon, Executive Director of Sugar Bowl Academy, according to Fox News.
Community Response and Support
Families of the victims expressed gratitude for the extensive efforts by Nevada County Search and Rescue, Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, and other agencies. Local residents and the wider Tahoe community have also offered support during this difficult time.
“We are heartbroken and are doing our best to care for one another and our families in the way we know these women would have wanted,” the families said.
