Trump shared messages from French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Truth Social, defending his controversial plan to acquire Greenland. The move has sparked both international alarm and amusement as the U.S. weighs its Arctic ambitions.

Macron Pushes Back, Yet Offers Diplomacy

In one text, Macron told Trump, “I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” while noting areas of alignment on Syria and Iran policy. He invited Trump to dinner in Paris and promised a G7 gathering after Davos, signaling a mix of caution and continued diplomacy despite the Greenland standoff.

Tariffs Threat Looms

Trump announced plans for steep tariffs targeting Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands, and Finland if his Greenland ambitions aren’t met. Starting at 10% on February 1 and jumping to 25% by June 1, these measures aim to pressure European nations to negotiate on the Arctic territory.
