U.S. Women’s Hockey Captain Hilary Knight Responds to Donald Trump’s Controversial Comment

The U.S. Olympic women’s ice hockey captain has publicly called out Donald Trump over what she described as a “sexist” remark following the team’s gold medal victory.

The controversy erupted after the U.S. men’s team received a congratulatory call from Trump during their championship celebrations. On speakerphone, the president reportedly said: “I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team. You do know that. I do believe I probably would be impeached [if the women’s team wasn’t invited].” While some men’s players laughed at the comment, five-time Olympic medalist Hilary Knight said it crossed a line.

“It was a distasteful joke,” Knight told reporters, emphasizing that women’s achievements should be the focus. “It’s overshadowing the incredible success of women at the Olympics—gold medal feats that deserve full recognition.” She highlighted the historic accomplishment of both teams winning double gold and urged that the conversation stay centered on celebrating that milestone rather than a poorly timed joke.

Not all reactions were critical. Forward Jack Hughes, speaking on Good Morning America, defended the men’s team’s response. “People are so negative about things. Everyone in that locker room knows how much we support the women’s team and how proud we are of them. The feeling is mutual,” he said.
