Most people keep salt in the kitchen for one reason only: cooking.
But this everyday pantry staple may also be one of the simplest and most overlooked cleaning tools hiding inside your home. In fact, many homeowners are rediscovering an old-fashioned bathroom trick that uses ordinary coarse salt to help freshen toilets, reduce odors, and support cleaner plumbing with surprisingly little effort.
At first, the idea sounds strange.
Why pour salt into a toilet?
The answer comes down to how salt naturally works. Its coarse texture gives it mild scrubbing power, while its absorbent properties help reduce lingering odors instead of simply covering them up with artificial fragrances. When allowed to sit in the toilet bowl for a period of time, salt can also help loosen minor buildup and soften residue that contributes to unpleasant smells or slow drainage.
The process itself is simple.
Many people pour a generous amount of coarse salt directly into the toilet bowl before bed or during periods when the bathroom will not be used for several hours. As the salt settles and dissolves gradually, it begins interacting with mineral deposits, waste residue, and odor-causing buildup inside the bowl and nearby pipes.
Afterward, a quick scrub with a toilet brush followed by a flush often leaves the bowl noticeably fresher and cleaner.
