What Was Found Inside a Bag of Broccoli Bought From a Grocery Store

What began as a completely ordinary trip to the supermarket turned into a moment of genuine shock for Neville, after an unexpected discovery inside a bag of broccoli. When he opened it at home, he noticed something unusual nestled among the green florets—a snake, coiled and still inside the packaging.

Neville’s first reaction wasn’t curiosity, but fear. He later explained that he is deeply uncomfortable around snakes, and in that moment, his mind immediately jumped to worst-case scenarios. With a vulnerable mother-in-law and a disabled son living in the home, he quickly imagined what could have happened if the reptile had gone unnoticed and been released into the kitchen.

Rather than panic further, he acted carefully. He secured the snake in a container, contacted his sister for support, and returned the product to the store where it had been purchased. Staff at the Aldi branch were reportedly startled by the discovery, treating the situation with caution as they assessed what had been brought back to them.

The snake was later transferred to Dudley Zoo, where specialists initially believed it to be a juvenile ladder snake. However, further examination by herpetology experts suggested a different identification. According to Dr. Steven J. R. Allain, the animal was most likely a viperine water snake—a non-venomous species commonly found in parts of the Mediterranean region.

Experts believe the snake may have been accidentally collected during harvesting in a European broccoli field and remained hidden through the supply chain. Remarkably, it appears to have survived the journey through refrigeration and transport conditions, eventually ending up in Neville’s kitchen thousands of miles away from its natural habitat.
