The school gym glowed with soft lights. Music played gently in the background, and families filled the room with quiet chatter and laughter. It was the annual father-daughter dance—a night meant to celebrate connection, joy, and the simple pleasure of being together.

Children twirled in colorful dresses, their fathers guiding them through simple steps. Smiles and laughter filled the room, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Among the crowd stood seven-year-old Emma. She wore a lavender dress she had chosen carefully days earlier, hoping it would make the evening feel special. Her mother stood nearby, quietly watching her. Though the room was filled with joy, her mother’s thoughts were heavy. Earlier, Emma had asked if her father would be able to come, even if only for a short while. It was a difficult question to answer, yet she chose to hold onto hope for her daughter’s sake.

At first, Emma stayed close to her mother, watching the dance floor. She observed other children spinning with their fathers, laughter and joy lighting their faces. After a while, she gently let go of her mother’s hand and moved toward the entrance, explaining that she wanted to be in a place where her father could see her easily if he arrived.
