At first glance, it looks like something from a storybook.
Standing roughly 15 feet tall beside a quiet rural road north of Gresham, Oregon, the unusual structure has beige siding, a small roof, and a glass panel facing the street. Drivers passing by might assume it’s a miniature observation tower, an oversized birdhouse, or perhaps an eccentric piece of yard art.
But this strange-looking structure has a surprisingly practical purpose.
Locals have reportedly nicknamed it a “driveway periscope.”
The idea is simple: help drivers see approaching traffic before pulling out of a driveway where trees, curves, or uneven terrain can block their view.
For homeowners living along narrow, wooded roads, getting a clear look at the street can sometimes be difficult. A vehicle may be approaching from behind a line of trees, while the driver waiting to leave has only a limited angle of visibility.
Some homeowners solve the problem with roadside mirrors.
This Oregon resident apparently chose a more creative approach.
