When the ceremony began, Sophia walked forward with a calm expression that concealed the storm inside her.
She said the vows.
She accepted the ring.
And when the guests applauded, she smiled because she did not know what else to do.
By the time the celebration ended, exhaustion had replaced most of her fear. Sophia returned to the enormous house that would now be her home and wondered whether she had just traded one difficult life for another.
Then came the moment that changed everything.
Later that evening, Sophia was alone in the bedroom when she heard movement nearby. Her husband disappeared into the bathroom, leaving her sitting nervously at the edge of the bed.
She stared at the wedding ring.

Then the bathroom door opened.
Sophia looked up—and froze.
For several seconds, she could not speak.
The man standing before her looked completely different from the person she thought she had married. There was something unexpected about his appearance, his expression, and the revelation he was about to make.
