The grocery store was quiet that afternoon.
It was one of those ordinary days when everyone seemed focused on their shopping lists, their errands, and getting home. I was standing in line at the checkout when I noticed a young girl a few places ahead of me.
She was holding a small birthday cake.
She looked excited at first, carefully keeping both hands around the box as though she didn’t want anything to happen to it. But when the cashier told her the total, her expression changed.
She checked the money in her hand.
