Rob Hirst’s death was confirmed on January 20, 2026. The founding Midnight Oil drummer and songwriter was 70. The band said he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones after a nearly three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

For generations of listeners, Hirst was much more than the drummer sitting behind the rest of the band. His playing was a major part of Midnight Oil’s unmistakable intensity—powerful, urgent, and seemingly always pushing the music forward.

He was also an important songwriter. Hirst received writing credits on some of the band’s best-known songs, including “Beds Are Burning,” “Blue Sky Mine,” and “Read About It.”

More Than a Drummer

Hirst helped shape Midnight Oil from its earliest years. He and guitarist Jim Moginie began making music together at school in 1972, with the group eventually evolving into Midnight Oil. Hirst remained with the band from 1975 through 2026.

His contribution went beyond keeping time. The band’s music frequently addressed environmental issues, Indigenous rights, and social responsibility, and Hirst was deeply involved in that creative identity.
