Rebecca had been saving for months to give her 86-year-old grandmother, Rose, a gift she had dreamed about for decades: a trip to Florida to see the ocean.
When Rose opened the envelope containing the tickets, she cried.
It was supposed to be a joyful trip.
But before the plane even left the ground, the two found themselves dealing with an uncomfortable passenger who seemed determined to make Rose’s journey difficult.
A Difficult Start
When Rebecca helped Rose find her seat, they discovered that their assigned seats were several rows apart.
Rose, who lived with arthritis, carefully lowered herself into her window seat. The woman beside her, Tiffany, had raised the armrest and was occupying part of Rose’s space.
Rebecca politely asked if she could make room.
Tiffany barely looked up.
She pointed out that she had paid for her seat and appeared unwilling to move any farther.
A flight attendant named Cheryl eventually came over to help. Because the flight was full, however, there were few options for rearranging passengers.
The situation became more uncomfortable when Tiffany made an insensitive remark about Rose being too old to travel.
Rebecca was understandably upset.
Rose, however, simply reached for her granddaughter’s hand.
“Don’t let this ruin our trip,” she told her.
So Rebecca reluctantly took her seat several rows away.
Rose remained in the cramped space as the plane prepared for departure.
