Flip the jar, watch the bubble rise slowly, and it feels like you have just discovered a simple way to judge what is really inside. But when it comes to honey, that little bubble is not the truth-teller many people think it is.
The test may look convincing, but it mostly shows how thick the honey is at that moment. Thickness can change for several normal reasons, and not all of them have anything to do with quality or adulteration.
Why the Bottle Test Falls Short
A slow-moving bubble usually means the honey is viscous. That can happen with genuine honey, but it can also happen with a cheaper blend if the temperature is low enough. On the other hand, a jar of pure honey can become thinner when it is warm.
Honey also varies naturally depending on the flowers the bees visited, the moisture content, and whether crystallization has started. These differences can affect color, texture, and flow without giving consumers a clear answer about whether anything has been added.
