Father’s Courtroom Words After Teen’s Killing Draw Attention

The courtroom was quiet as Austin Metcalf’s family confronted the person convicted of taking the 17-year-old’s life. What began as a dispute at a high school track meet ended in a fatal stabbing, a murder conviction, and a sentence that still could not answer the grief left behind.

Karmelo Anthony was found guilty of murder after prosecutors argued that a conflict over seating beneath a team tent escalated into violence. According to the case presented in court, the confrontation ended with a single knife wound to Austin’s chest.

The jury rejected Anthony’s claim of self-defense. He was sentenced to 35 years.

A Father Says His Family Was “Robbed”

After the verdict, Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, spoke sharply about what his family had lost. He said they had been “robbed,” not only of Austin’s future, but also of the chance to remember him without a public narrative he believed had distorted who his son was.
