He Came Home Early and Found a Secret in His Own House

He thought he was walking into a quiet afternoon surprise. In one hand, Nathan carried white roses. In the other, a shopping bag filled with tiny clothes for the baby he and his wife, Audrey, were expecting. But when he stepped into the living room of their Greenwich home, the scene in front of him changed his family forever.

Audrey was seven months pregnant, kneeling on the marble floor, crying as she scrubbed her own arms with bleach. Her skin was raw and red. Nearby, the maternity nurse hired to help her sat comfortably with a bowl of fruit. Nathan’s mother was also in the room, rigid and silent. His sister, Sarah, stood frozen in the hallway.

The flowers fell from Nathan’s hand. Audrey flinched at the sound, and that small movement told him more than any explanation could have. She was not simply upset. She was afraid.

When he knelt beside her and tried to take the rag away, Audrey begged him not to be angry. She said she was “almost clean.” Nathan realized then that whatever had been happening in his home had gone far beyond household tension or pregnancy stress.
