A devastating high-speed train crash in southern Spain has left at least 46 people dead and dozens injured, in one of the country’s most serious rail disasters in recent years.
The accident occurred on January 18 near Adamuz, in Córdoba province, when an Iryo high-speed train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and crossed into the path of an oncoming Renfe Alvia train traveling from Madrid toward Huelva. The collision caused several carriages to derail, with some falling down an embankment.
At the time of the initial reports, authorities confirmed at least 39 deaths and more than 100 injuries. Rescue teams worked through the night to search the wreckage and evacuate passengers. Many of the injured were taken to hospitals in Córdoba, while emergency services launched a major rescue operation at the scene.
Hundreds of emergency personnel, including police officers, medical teams and members of Spain’s Military Emergency Unit, were deployed following the crash. Authorities reported that hundreds of passengers and crew members were aboard the two trains.
