A quick flash of silver near a bathroom cabinet or along a kitchen baseboard can be easy to ignore. But if you keep seeing the same tiny, fast-moving insect at night, your home may be offering the damp, dark conditions silverfish like most.
Silverfish are wingless insects with flat, tapered bodies, long antennae, and bristle-like tails. They do not usually pose a danger to people or pets, but their presence can be a useful warning sign. In many homes, repeated sightings point less to dirt and more to moisture, humidity, and easy hiding places.
Where Silverfish Usually Hide
Silverfish prefer areas that are dark, humid, and rarely disturbed. Bathrooms, basements, kitchens, closets, laundry areas, and spaces around plumbing are common places to find them.
They often move quickly and are most noticeable at night. Seeing one silverfish does not automatically mean there is a major infestation, but repeated sightings are worth paying attention to, especially if they appear in several rooms.
