A wooden tower beside a rural driveway can look mysterious at first. It may seem like an old lookout stand, a homemade landmark, or something left behind from a past project. But in some places, that unusual structure has a very practical purpose: helping drivers see traffic they otherwise could not see.
These structures are often known as driveway periscopes or roadside periscopes. They are low-tech visibility aids used where a driveway meets a road with a curve, hill, wall, embankment, or other obstruction that blocks the driver’s view.
How a Roadside Periscope Works
The idea is simple. Instead of using cameras, sensors, apps, or powered equipment, the tower uses mirrors placed inside a tall housing. Those mirrors are angled so a person waiting at the driveway can look into the system and see traffic approaching from a direction that would normally be hidden.
It works on the same basic principle as a traditional periscope. Light reflects from one mirror to another, redirecting the driver’s line of sight around an obstacle.
