What led to the tragedy during the Maldives diving excursion that resulted in multiple fatalities

Maldives Deep-Dive Disaster: What Investigators Say May Have Triggered the Fatal Cave Incident

A routine-looking diving and research itinerary in the Maldives has become one of the country’s most devastating underwater tragedies, after five Italian divers failed to return from a deep dive and a Maldivian military diver later died during the recovery effort. What started as an exploration mission quickly escalated into a high-risk search-and-recovery operation—one that has now prompted a full investigation into dive planning, depth compliance, technical diving procedures, safety protocols, and permit documentation.

How the Trip Began—and Where It Went Wrong

Officials say the group was traveling aboard a luxury liveaboard, the Duke of York, which departed Malé on May 10 for a week-long schedule of dives and research activities. During a morning dive, five experienced Italian divers entered the water and did not resurface.

Authorities later identified the site as an area with a complex underwater cave system at depths close to 50 meters—a range widely viewed as beyond standard recreational diving limits in the Maldives.

Depth Limits in the Maldives: A Key Focus of the Investigation

Maldivian officials have reiterated that recreational diving is legally limited to 30 meters. Dives beyond that typically require technical certifications, specialized equipment (including appropriate gas planning), and formal authorization.
