When Random Bruises Are Worth a Closer Look

A bruise you cannot explain is easy to brush off. Maybe you bumped into a table, carried heavy bags, or knocked your leg without noticing. Most of the time, that is exactly what happened. But when bruises keep appearing, look larger than expected, or show up with no clear reason, they can be a useful signal from your body.

Unexplained bruising is often linked to everyday factors, including aging skin, minor injuries, or certain medications. In some cases, though, frequent bruising may point to something that deserves a healthcare professional’s attention.

Why Bruises Happen

A bruise forms when small blood vessels under the skin are damaged. A small amount of blood leaks into the surrounding tissue, creating the dark or discolored mark people recognize as a bruise.

As the body breaks down and reabsorbs that blood, the bruise usually changes color before fading. Most minor bruises heal on their own within a couple of weeks and do not require special treatment beyond basic care and time.
