It Is Not Just Skin Acting Like a Sponge
For a long time, many people believed that finger wrinkling happened because the outer layer of skin absorbed water, expanded, and folded. That explanation sounds reasonable, but it does not tell the whole story.
When fingers stay underwater for several minutes, the autonomic nervous system plays a key role. It can trigger tiny blood vessels beneath the skin in the fingers and palms to narrow. As those vessels constrict, the soft tissue beneath the surface changes shape, and the skin forms the familiar ridges and grooves.
