Sarah watched her sixteen-year-old son in the hallway, tying his sneakers with the quick confidence of someone who had done it a thousand times before. His backpack hung casually from one shoulder, and he looked like any other teenager rushing off to school on a normal morning.
“Did you finish your history assignment?” Sarah called from the kitchen while preparing breakfast.
“Yes, Mom,” Daniel replied, grabbing his jacket and leaning over to give her a quick kiss on the cheek.
“See you tonight.”
The front door shut with a familiar click. Sarah moved to the window and watched him walk down the quiet, tree-lined street. She had no idea that this ordinary moment would become the last time she saw her son for nearly a year.
When a Normal Day Turns Into a Nightmare
That evening, when Daniel didn’t come home, Sarah tried to stay calm. Sometimes he stayed late at school practicing guitar with friends, and other times he wandered to the park and simply lost track of time. Normally he would send a message, but maybe his phone battery had died.
She repeated these thoughts to herself while cooking dinner in the silent kitchen.
She ate alone, leaving Daniel’s plate warm in the oven just in case he walked through the door.
But when the night grew darker and his room remained empty, the uneasiness inside her slowly turned into fear.
Sarah called his phone again and again, each time hearing voicemail.
By midnight, she was sitting in a police station filling out a missing person report, her hands shaking.
An officer listened carefully, writing notes.
