Animal Rescued From the Cold Looks Like a Hairless Cat—Its True Identity Will Surprise You

Fur keeps animals warm, protected, and recognizable—but what happens when an animal has none? Recently, rescuers in Nova Scotia discovered a truly remarkable case: a completely hairless raccoon surviving in the wild.

Last month, the team at Hope for Wildlife, a conservation nonprofit, was alerted when a couple in West Arichat found a tiny creature shivering in their backyard. At first glance, it looked like a hairless Sphynx cat—but a closer look revealed something extraordinary. This was a northern raccoon…without a single strand of fur, except for small tufts around her snout, feet, and ankles.

The rescue confirmed it was one of the most severe cases they had ever seen. Director Hope Swinimer told The Canadian Press, “It’s just tufts of fur…we’ve had balding raccoons before, but never anything like this.” Despite her vulnerable state, the raccoon—affectionately named Rufus, after the cartoon naked mole rat—had managed to survive the harsh winter entirely on her own.
