Eric Dane, Beloved Grey’s Anatomy Star, Dies at 53 After Battle with ALS
Hollywood mourns the loss of Eric Dane, the acclaimed Grey’s Anatomy actor, who passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026, after a courageous fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Dane, 53, had bravely shared his diagnosis with the public last year, raising awareness for a disease that affects thousands worldwide.
In a heartfelt statement to People Magazine, Dane’s family confirmed his passing:
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always.”
The family also expressed gratitude for the love and support Dane received from fans, asking for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.
Dane’s final public appearance came in December 2025 during a virtual Giving Tuesday panel hosted by I AM ALS and Synapticure. He spoke candidly about the emotional toll of living with ALS and the challenge of staying positive amidst a devastating diagnosis. Reflecting on his experience, Dane said:
“I have no reason to be in a good spirit at any time… I don’t think anybody would blame me if I went upstairs in my bedroom, crawled under the sheets, and spent the next two weeks crying. But I was pleasantly surprised to realize that wasn’t going to be me.”
