Donald Trump’s fascination with Greenland has left politicians, analysts, and the public scratching their heads. Why would the former president push so hard to acquire a massive Arctic island, even hinting at military options? Now, a former CIA operative is weighing in.
Trump’s Bold Moves
The controversy escalated after Trump threatened tariffs on the U.K. and seven European nations unless the U.S. could purchase Greenland, which is currently governed by Denmark. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer quickly fired back, saying only Greenland and Denmark “have the right to decide” its future.
Trump, however, hasn’t backed down, repeatedly claiming the island is “vital for national security” and warning it could be acquired “the easy way” or “the hard way”—comments that sent shockwaves across NATO. Meanwhile, Greenlanders themselves have firmly rejected becoming part of the United States, and just 20% of Americans support Trump’s push, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.
A Former CIA Officer Weighs In
Andrew Bustamante, a former CIA covert operations officer and U.S. Air Force veteran, believes Trump’s Greenland interest goes deeper than headlines suggest. Speaking to The Express, Bustamante said:
“American dominance in the Arctic is critical to American primacy. Greenland holds strategic minerals and rare earths essential for economic and military power. Global warming is making these resources more accessible, creating real American interest. While there’s no legal way to seize it by force, deals with Greenlanders seeking independence are possible.”
