Instead of walking away, I did what most of us would probably do—I pulled out my phone and started searching. I compared images, read descriptions, and tried to match what I was seeing with anything familiar.
At first, nothing quite fit.
But slowly, patterns started to appear.
And then the answer became clear.
A surprising natural explanation
What I had found wasn’t mysterious in a dangerous or unknown way. It was actually something completely natural:
👉 A fungus from the genus Exidia
These fungi are known for their unusual, jelly-like appearance. They can look soft, translucent, and almost alien at first glance. Most often, they grow on decaying wood—but under the right conditions, especially in damp environments, they can appear on unexpected surfaces too.
Even metal.
That part still surprised me.
But suddenly, everything made sense. The recent moisture, the weather, the quiet conditions of the fence—it all created the perfect environment for something like this to form.
From unsettling to fascinating
What initially felt strange and a little uncomfortable turned into something genuinely fascinating. Instead of something unknown or alarming, it was simply nature doing what it always does—quietly adapting, growing, and existing in ways we don’t always notice.
It’s funny how quickly perception changes once you understand what you’re looking at.
What seemed eerie at first turned out to be completely harmless.
Final thoughts
I walked away from that moment with a new perspective. Even the most ordinary spaces can hold surprises if you take a closer look. And sometimes, what feels unfamiliar or strange is just nature operating in its own quiet, complex way.
I don’t think I’ll look at that fence the same way again.
