A 20-year-old woman lost her life this Monday after being struck by a stray bullet during a violent gun attack on Fifth Street, sending shockwaves through the community and reigniting urgent concerns about the rising wave of gun violence across the country.
Preliminary reports reveal that Mariana Gómez was walking through the busy street around 5:30 p.m. when gunfire erupted. The attack targeted a local merchant, but in seconds, chaos engulfed passersby and nearby residents. Mariana was hit in the abdomen as she tried to take cover. Bystanders rushed to assist her, and she was transported to a nearby medical center, but despite efforts to save her, she died minutes later from her injuries.
The intended target, a 45-year-old merchant, also succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds at the scene. Police officers patrolling nearby responded swiftly, launching a manhunt that led to the arrest of a 17-year-old boy believed to be one of the attackers.
