Tragic Loss: Innocent Bystander Killed During Shooting, Community Seeks Answers

Colonel Jorge Medina, commander of the Metropolitan Police, addressed the incident in a statement:

“This tragic event saddens us deeply. Mariana had no connection to the intended target; she was an innocent victim. Thanks to our officers’ prompt action, we were able to apprehend a minor carrying a firearm, who has prior charges for illegal possession and attempted murder.”

The detainee was handed over to the Children and Adolescents Prosecutor’s Office, with charges of aggravated homicide and illegal possession of a weapon expected to follow.

Mariana’s grieving family is demanding justice. “She was just going to submit a resume; she wanted to find a job and help out at home. Her life was taken for no reason—it’s not fair,” her mother said, fighting back tears.

Local residents are calling for increased police patrols and installation of security cameras in the area, which has been plagued by extortion and gang-related violence in recent months. Civil organizations are also urging authorities to implement stronger prevention strategies, stricter gun control, and better citizen protection, particularly in high-risk neighborhoods.

Mariana’s body will lie in state this Tuesday at the Santa Cruz Funeral Home in the San Vicente neighborhood, allowing family, friends, and community members to pay their final respects. Her death is a heartbreaking reminder of the innocent lives lost to unchecked violence and the urgent need for action to make streets safer for everyone.
