The morning began like so many others since Jonathan’s passing—quiet in a way that felt too heavy to ignore. The house was still, almost frozen in time. I stood at the kitchen sink rinsing a cereal bowl, carefully avoiding the sight of his keys hanging by the door. Even the smallest reminders had become difficult to face.

Then the phone rang.

It was Letty’s school principal. His voice was urgent, clipped, and immediately unsettling. He told me I needed to come in right away. Six men had arrived at the school asking for my twelve-year-old daughter by name, and the situation had escalated quickly.

My chest tightened.

Three months earlier, I had heard those same words—“come in immediately”—when I was told my husband was gone. Now, hearing them again sent everything spinning.

I drove faster than I should have, my thoughts tangled in fear. Who were these men? Why were they looking for Letty?

When I arrived, Principal Brennan was waiting outside his office, visibly shaken. He explained that a group of workers had entered the school, asking for Letty. I had walked into the bathroom to find Letty standing over a sink filled with her long hair, scissors in hand. Her uneven haircut and trembling voice told me everything before she even explained. A classmate named Millie, recently in remission from cancer, had been bullied for her appearance. Letty, quietly determined not to let her suffer alone, had cut her own hair to donate for a wig.

It wasn’t rebellion. It was compassion.
