We like to think love is spontaneous, mysterious, and entirely in the heart—but new research suggests our romantic choices may be quietly guided by cues we barely notice. One of the simplest—and most overlooked—signals? Height.

An international study spanning Canada, Cuba, Norway, and the U.S. reveals surprising patterns in how men and women perceive attractiveness. Researchers surveyed 536 adults, showing them illustrations of men and women of different heights. Participants were asked to pick ideal partners for both casual dating and long-term relationships.
The results were consistent: men gravitated toward women slightly shorter than the national average, while women preferred men a bit taller than the average male height. On average, men favored women about 2.5 centimeters below their country’s average, while women chose men roughly 2.3 centimeters taller than the norm.
These patterns appeared across cultures, age groups, and demographics, hinting at deep-rooted evolutionary and social influences rather than passing trends.
