You spot it on the wall, pause for a second, and wonder: Where did that come from?

One insect inside your home usually isn’t a reason to panic. It may have wandered through an open window, slipped beneath a door, or been attracted by indoor light and warmth. Sometimes, it’s simply an isolated visitor.

But the location and circumstances can tell you something.

A bug repeatedly appearing in the same area may point to conditions that insects find appealing—moisture, food residue, clutter, or tiny gaps that provide easy access. That doesn’t automatically mean you have an infestation. It simply means the unexpected visitor could be worth investigating.

Start With Identification

Before reaching for a spray, take a closer look.

Its size, shape, color, wings, and where you found it can help narrow down what you’re dealing with. Was it near the kitchen, bathroom, basement, window, or another damp area? Did you see just one, or have similar insects appeared several times?

Those details matter because different insects are attracted to different conditions.

A single harmless houseguest requires a very different response from repeated sightings of a pest that thrives indoors.
