One of the biggest reasons cats rub against people is scent marking. Cats have scent glands around their cheeks, forehead, and other parts of the body. When they rub against you, they can transfer their scent, helping identify you as someone familiar within their environment.
In simple terms, your cat may be saying, “I know you. You belong here.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean your cat is trying to claim ownership of you. Scent is an important part of how cats understand their surroundings, recognize familiar individuals, and feel comfortable in their territory.
