His Family Expected a Fortune, Then the Letter Was Read

The room had the kind of silence that makes every small movement feel loud. Russell Bennett’s children sat across from his widow, waiting for the reading of his final instructions, and neither of them seemed interested in hiding what they believed about her marriage.

To them, she had always been the younger woman who married a wealthy older man. They had already written the story in their minds: she wanted comfort, security, and access to a fortune that should have belonged to the family by blood.

Then the lawyer placed a small box in front of her.

Inside were only three things: a brass key, a worn leather notebook, and a folded letter with her name written in Russell’s familiar handwriting.
