“It was definitely tense,” Quist said. “We were all nervous, so we tried to keep things light, motivate each other, and not fall into panic. But once people sent me some photos, it really hit me what was happening.”
Seeing graphic images of blood made the situation real for Quist. “I was scared. We were thinking about escape plans in case someone came to the door—we were ready to run if needed,” he added.
When the lockdown ended, police escorted Quist and the others safely, keeping their hands up at all times. Federal police Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd confirmed the suspect matched an earlier alert describing a “female in a dress with brown hair.” While authorities are working to understand the attack, they caution that uncovering the motive will be difficult.
“This is a tragedy we may never fully understand,” Floyd said. “But we are committed to uncovering what happened and why.”
Canada grieves as the community begins to heal from this shocking loss.
